Smart Home Installation in Eugene, OR

Smart devices fit everyday life in Eugene well. A good thermostat schedule trims heating through the long, cool rainy season and keeps a house comfortable during summer heat waves like the one in June 2021, when Eugene hit 111 degrees. A video doorbell shows who's on the porch on dark winter afternoons, and cameras help keep an eye on packages and bikes in neighborhoods near campus. Smart locks make it easy to let in family, dog walkers or house sitters without hiding a key under a wet doormat. But Eugene homes heat in many different ways, from gas furnaces and heat pumps to electric baseboard heaters and ductless mini-splits, and each one needs the right device and wiring.

We check compatibility before anything goes on the wall, then install, connect and configure. Our licensed electricians handle the wiring for smart switches and dimmers, hardwired video doorbells, low-voltage thermostats and line-voltage thermostats for baseboard heat, adding a common-wire adapter or new doorbell transformer when the existing setup can't power the device. We mount cameras and smart locks, connect everything to your Wi-Fi and phone, set up schedules and alerts, and walk you through each device before we go. We take the packaging with us and leave notes on what's installed and where.

What this covers

  • Smart thermostat installation and setup
  • Line-voltage thermostats for baseboard heat
  • Hardwired video doorbell installation
  • Smart lock and keypad deadbolt installation
  • Indoor and outdoor camera mounting
  • Smart switches, dimmers and plugs
  • Smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Wi-Fi mesh setup and app walkthrough
A note from around here: Baseboard-heated ranches in Bethel, River Road and Santa Clara often need line-voltage smart thermostats, while bungalows in the Friendly Area and Whiteaker and newer north Eugene homes ask us most for video doorbells, cameras and keypad locks.

How a smart home installation visit usually goes

Check Compatibility

We look at your heating system, existing wiring and Wi-Fi coverage and confirm each device will work in your home.

Install Hardware

We mount devices, and our licensed electricians make the wiring connections and add transformers or adapters where needed.

Connect and Configure

We connect devices to Wi-Fi, set up apps and hubs, and build schedules, scenes and alerts around your routine.

Test and Teach

We test every device, show you how to use it and adjust settings until you're comfortable, then clean up.

Utility programs are worth a look before you buy. EWEB began offering a smart thermostat rebate in late 2023 for customers whose main heat is an electric forced-air furnace or a heat pump; it doesn't cover baseboard heaters, wall heaters or ductless systems, so it pays to check which category your home falls into. Springfield Utility Board, NW Natural and the Energy Trust of Oregon have run their own programs at times, too. We'll help you pick a qualifying model where one fits and leave you the model number and install date for the paperwork. Wi-Fi is the other local quirk: plaster walls in older bungalows, brick fireplaces in mid-century ranches and daylight basements in the South Hills all block signals, so we check strength where each device will live and add mesh points where needed.

What shapes the price in Eugene

Smart home installation cost depends on how many devices you want and how ready your house is for them. A single thermostat or doorbell with compatible wiring is quick. Line-voltage thermostats for baseboard heat are priced per room, so a house with heaters in every bedroom takes longer. Adding a common-wire adapter, a new doorbell transformer or new low-voltage wire adds time and parts. Cameras mounted high on a South Hills house with a daylight basement, or on brick and stone, take more setup. Weak Wi-Fi may mean adding mesh nodes. Putting several devices in during one visit keeps the cost per device down.

Neighbors often ask

Can I get a smart thermostat for electric baseboard heaters?

Yes, but it has to be the right kind. Baseboard heaters run on line voltage, so standard smart thermostats made for furnaces won't work and can be dangerous if wired to them. We install smart line-voltage thermostats designed for baseboard and wall heaters, usually one per room or zone, and our licensed electricians make the connections. You can then set schedules and adjust each room from your phone.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Most heat pumps with a standard wired thermostat can use a smart model, as long as it supports the heat pump's reversing valve and backup heat. Ductless mini-splits usually need a different approach, such as a remote-control style controller. We check your system first and recommend a device that will actually work with it, then configure it so backup heat only kicks in when it should.

Can a video doorbell go where my old chime button is?

Usually, yes. Most video doorbells use the existing low-voltage doorbell wiring and keep your indoor chime working. Older transformers often can't supply enough power, which causes rebooting and dropped video, so we check it and replace it if needed. We also mount the doorbell with a wedge or angle kit if your entry faces sideways to the walk, so the camera sees visitors clearly.

Do you install smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?

Yes. We install smart and interconnected smoke and CO alarms, including hardwired models connected by our licensed electricians, that send alerts to your phone. Oregon requires carbon monoxide alarms in homes with a carbon monoxide source, such as a gas furnace, fireplace or attached garage, when the home is sold or rented, and smart models also tell you when a battery is low or an alarm has gone off while you're away.

Can you set up water leak and freeze sensors?

Yes. Small leak sensors under sinks, behind toilets, by the water heater and in the crawl space can warn you about a drip before it ruins a floor. Freeze sensors are useful in crawl spaces and unheated garages during cold snaps like the January 2024 ice storm, when many Eugene pipes froze. We place them where they'll help most and connect them to your phone.
