Ceiling Fan Installation in Eugene, OR

Eugene used to be able to count on mild summers, and plenty of homes here were built with no air conditioning at all. That has changed. The June 2021 heat dome pushed temperatures far into the triple digits, and in July 2024 the city strung together five straight days above 100 degrees, the longest such streak on record, peaking at 106. Upstairs bedrooms in older bungalows, rooms under the roof in South Hills split-levels and west-facing living rooms in ranch homes can become hard to sleep in on those nights. A ceiling fan is one of the simplest ways to make those rooms more livable, and in winter it can run in reverse to push warm air down from high and vaulted ceilings.

A ceiling fan is heavy and moving, so the box that holds it matters more than anything. We check whether the existing ceiling box is fan-rated and securely attached, and if not, we install a fan brace and a proper box, often through the existing opening. Then we assemble the fan, choose the right downrod, mount it securely, attach the blades and light kit and balance it so it runs quietly. Our licensed electricians make the wiring connections, set up wall or remote controls and add a new switch where it makes sense, so the whole job is finished in one visit.

What this covers

  • Fan-rated box and brace installation
  • Light fixture to ceiling fan conversion
  • Fan assembly and mounting
  • Downrods for high and vaulted ceilings
  • Blade balancing and wobble correction
  • Wall controls, remotes and smart fan setup
  • Light kit installation
  • Old fan removal and cleanup
A note from around here: Most of our fan calls come from upstairs bedrooms in Friendly Area and Fairmount homes, vaulted great rooms in the South Hills and west-facing bedrooms in Bethel and Santa Clara ranches that soak up afternoon sun.

How a ceiling fan installation visit usually goes

Check the Ceiling

We look at the existing box and wiring, measure the ceiling height and slope and decide with you how the fan and light will be controlled.

Brace and Prepare

If needed, we install a fan brace and a new box, and we make sure the power is off and confirmed before any work starts.

Assemble and Hang

We assemble the fan, set the right downrod, hang it securely and make clean, tight wiring connections in the canopy.

Balance and Test

We run the fan on every speed, balance the blades, test the light and controls and clean up the work area.

Older Eugene homes require extra care. Plaster ceilings can crack or crumble around an old box if handled roughly, and some houses still have older wiring that may lack a ground or have brittle insulation. If we find outdated wiring, overheated connections or an overloaded box, we show you what we found and repair it before installing a new fan, since adding a fan to a questionable circuit isn't worth the risk. In newer homes and apartments, the box and wiring are usually ready, and the main challenges are ceiling height and choosing a fan that's sized properly for the room.

What shapes the price in Eugene

Ceiling fan installation cost depends on what's already in place. Replacing an existing fan on a sound, fan-rated box is the most straightforward job. Swapping a light fixture for a fan usually requires a new brace and box. High and vaulted ceilings, stairwells and steep slopes need taller ladders, longer downrods and more time. Fans with complex light kits or many parts take longer to assemble, and any new wiring, switch locations or circuits add materials and labor. Installing several fans in one visit is the most cost-effective approach.

Neighbors often ask

Can a ceiling fan go where my light fixture is now?

Often, yes, but the existing box usually needs an upgrade. Boxes meant for a lightweight fixture aren't designed to hold a fan's weight and vibration. We install a fan-rated box and a brace that spans the joists, typically without opening up the ceiling. Then our licensed electricians connect the fan to the existing circuit and set up controls so you can run the fan and light separately.

My ceiling is vaulted. Will a fan work?

Yes, with the right hardware. Many fans include a mount that handles a moderate slope, and steeper ceilings need an angled adapter and a longer downrod so the blades clear the ceiling and sit at a useful height. We'll measure the slope and ceiling height so you get the right parts the first time.

Can you install a fan where there's no fixture now?

Yes. Our licensed electricians can run a new circuit or extend an existing one, add a ceiling box with proper bracing and install a wall switch or control. In some older homes with plaster ceilings or limited attic access, this takes more planning, and we'll walk you through the options before we start.

Does a ceiling fan really help during a heat wave?

It helps a lot for how little it costs to run. A fan doesn't lower the room temperature, but the moving air makes you feel several degrees cooler. Combined with opening windows during the cool valley nights and closing blinds during the day, a fan can make an upstairs bedroom much more comfortable. On the hottest days, it works best together with a heat pump, window unit or portable air conditioner.

My fan wobbles and clicks. Can it be fixed?

Most wobbly fans can be fixed. The usual causes are loose blade screws, a warped or unbalanced blade, a loose canopy or bracket, or a box that isn't secured well. We tighten everything, balance the blades and check the mount. If the motor is grinding or the fan is damaged, replacing it may make more sense, and we'll tell you honestly which is the better value.
