Gutter Cleaning & Repair in Eugene, OR

Gutters work harder in Eugene than almost anywhere. Roughly forty inches of rain fall here each year, most of it between October and May, often in long soaking stretches when an atmospheric river parks over the valley. At the same time, the trees that make the city so green fill gutters nonstop: Douglas fir and cedar drop needles all year, bigleaf maples and Oregon white oaks shed leaves through late fall, sweetgum street trees scatter spiky seed balls, and moss growing on the roof sheds granules and clumps every time it rains. When a gutter clogs, water spills over the edge, splashes against siding, soaks the crawl space and wears down the fascia board behind the gutter.

We clean gutters by hand, scooping out needles, leaves, moss and roof grit, then flush every run and downspout with water to make sure it drains. We look for leaking seams and end caps, loose spikes or hangers, sections that have lost their slope, and spots where the gutter has pulled away from rotting fascia. Leaks get resealed, sags get new hidden hangers and a corrected pitch, and short downspouts get extensions or splash blocks so the water lands well away from the foundation. We bag the debris, rinse off the walks and point out anything on the roof edge you should know about.

What this covers

  • Hand cleaning of gutters and valleys
  • Downspout flushing and clog removal
  • Leaking seam and end cap resealing
  • Sagging gutter rehanging and pitch correction
  • Downspout extensions and splash blocks
  • Gutter guard installation and cleaning
  • Moss clearing along roof edges
  • Debris bagging and walk cleanup
A note from around here: The tall firs and oaks over the South Hills, Laurel Hill and Hendricks Park area bury gutters in needles and leaves every fall, while the sweetgum-lined streets of the Friendly Area and Jefferson Westside keep them clogged with seed balls into winter.

How a gutter cleaning & repair visit usually goes

Inspect

We look over gutters, downspouts, hangers, fascia and the roof edge, and note leaks, sags, moss and damaged sections.

Clean and Flush

Needles, leaves and moss come out by hand, then every run and downspout is flushed to confirm water flows freely.

Repair

We reseal seams, rehang sagging sections, correct the slope and extend downspouts away from the foundation.

Clean Up and Report

We bag the debris, rinse walks and beds, and show you photos of anything you should keep an eye on.

Where the water goes after the downspout matters just as much as clean gutters. Many older Eugene houses send their downspouts into buried pipes that run to the curb or a drywell, and those lines fill with silt, needles and roots over the decades until water backs up and spills out at the joint. We test those connections, flush what we can and, where a line is beyond saving, set up an above-ground extension that carries water away from the house. In neighborhoods on the flat valley floor, like Bethel, River Road and Santa Clara, the clay soil barely drains in winter, so water dumped next to the foundation ends up in the crawl space. On South Hills lots, runoff heading downhill can undercut paths and saturate the soil behind retaining walls, so we aim it where the slope can handle it.

What shapes the price in Eugene

Gutter cleaning cost depends on the length of the gutters, how high and steep the roof is and how much has built up. A single-story ranch in Bethel or Santa Clara with a few downspouts goes quickly. A two-story house in the South Hills with a daylight basement on the downhill side, steep pitches and heavy fir cover takes much longer, since the ladder setup alone is bigger. Gutters packed with wet needles and moss, downspouts clogged solid, and buried drain lines that need clearing add time. Repairs like resealing, rehanging sagging runs and adding downspouts or extensions add materials. Regular spring and fall cleanings keep each visit lighter and cheaper than a once-every-few-years overhaul.

Neighbors often ask

How often should gutters be cleaned in Eugene?

For most homes, twice a year: once in late fall after the maples and oaks have dropped their leaves, usually by early December, and again in late spring to clear needles, catkins and moss. Houses under Douglas firs or big conifers often need a third cleaning, since needles fall year-round. The fall visit matters most, because that's right before the heaviest rain arrives.

Do gutter guards work with fir needles?

Some do much better than others. Fir and cedar needles slip right through coarse screens and foam inserts, so under conifers we recommend a fine stainless micro-mesh guard. Even good guards collect a mat of needles and moss on top that has to be brushed off now and then, so they reduce cleaning rather than end it. We can install guards on clean gutters and tell you honestly whether they're worth it for your trees.

Water pours over one corner of my gutter every time it rains. Why?

It's usually one of three things: a downspout plugged partway down, a gutter that has sagged and lost its slope, or a corner where two roof slopes dump more water than one downspout can handle. We clear the downspout, recheck the pitch and rehang the section if needed, and can add a second downspout or a larger one where the volume calls for it.

Can you clean gutters on a steep or tall South Hills house?

Yes. We use tall ladders with stabilizers and standoffs that keep weight off the gutter itself, and we plan the setup around slopes, decks and landscaping. On the occasional roof that's too steep or high to reach safely from a ladder, we'll tell you up front and talk through the options before the visit.

Should I worry about the moss on my roof?

A little moss along the edges is normal in Eugene, but thick mats hold water against the shingles, lift their edges and wash into the gutters every time it rains. We can sweep loose moss off the roof edge and out of the gutters during a cleaning and install zinc strips near the ridge, which help slow regrowth. Heavy moss over an entire roof is a bigger project, and we'll give you a straight assessment of what it needs.
